An on-screen ring sizer can measure the inside of a ring you already own without a printer, ruler or camera permission. The important word is calibrated. A browser knows how many CSS pixels it has drawn, but that number does not reliably reveal how large those pixels are on the physical display. Device scaling, browser zoom and screen density can all change the real-world result.

The tool on this page solves that problem by asking you to provide one known physical length. You match a bar to the short edge of a standard payment card, which is 53.98 mm. Only after you confirm that match does the ring circle unlock. The circle is then drawn from your own calibration, not from a generic screen assumption.

What does an on-screen ring sizer measure?

This tool measures a ring’s inner diameter, the straight-line distance across the empty opening from one inside edge to the opposite inside edge. That is the useful dimension because sizing systems describe the space available for a finger, not the amount of metal around it. Measuring the outside of the band adds the metal on both sides and produces a much larger, incorrect result.

Use a ring that fits the exact finger and hand you are sizing. A good fit on a right index finger does not establish the size of a left ring finger. The ring should also have a reasonably circular opening. A visibly bent, oval or adjustable ring cannot provide one dependable diameter until a jeweller restores its shape.

The coloured disk acts as a physical reference. Place the ring over it and enlarge or shrink the disk until its edge meets the inner edge of the band all the way around. How do you calibrate the screen correctly?

Use a standard, rigid payment card or identification card in the ID-1 format. Its short edge is 53.98 mm under the ISO/IEC 7810:2019 identification-card specification. Choose a card that is flat and has not been trimmed, split or badly worn. A hotel key or gift card may look similar but should not be assumed to follow the same standard.

Place the card gently on the screen with its short edge parallel to the calibration bar. Adjust the bar until its two end marks align with the two corners of the card. Looking straight down reduces parallax, which is the apparent shift that occurs when your eye is off to one side. The one-pixel buttons help when a touch slider jumps past the exact alignment.

Confirm the calibration only when both ends match. Do not copy the displayed pixel count from a different phone or computer. That number describes the present browser and display state, not a universal conversion. If you rotate the device, pinch-zoom the page, change browser zoom or move the window to another monitor, reset and calibrate again before trusting the circle.

Match the inner opening

Lay a clean ring flat over the circle. Adjust the diameter until the coloured disk fills the opening without disappearing under the band.

Use a clean card and ring, and place them without pressure. Metal, stones and grit can mark an unprotected display. A thin, transparent screen protector is normally fine because calibration and measurement take place on the same surface, but a raised or textured protector can make the ring sit unevenly. Stop if either object rocks rather than lying flat.

How do you match the circle to the ring?

After confirming calibration, set the ring flat and centred over the coloured disk. Start smaller than the opening, then increase the diameter slowly. Stop when the disk fills the opening and its boundary meets the inner edge of the band. If the disk disappears beneath the metal, reduce it. The target is a clean boundary visible against the inner edge, not a circle matched to the band’s outer rim.

Look straight down and check at four points: top, bottom, left and right. If two sides match but the other two do not, the ring may be tilted, not centred or slightly oval. Rotate the ring by a quarter turn and repeat. Similar results in both orientations are more persuasive than one quick visual match.

How does the tool choose US, UK and EU sizes?

The diameter slider moves in 0.1 mm steps. For each position, the result panel finds the closest row in the same conversion data used by this site’s charts. It shows a US number, UK letter and EU/ISO circumference for that row, while retaining your selected diameter below the label. The word closest matters because ring charts use discrete size steps but a measured opening can fall between them.

EU/ISO values correspond to inner circumference in millimetres. Diameter and circumference are related by π, but published chart rows are rounded, so it is safer to keep the original diameter with your result. A note such as “17.3 mm inner diameter, closest to US 7 / UK N½ / EU 54.4” gives a seller more information than “size 7” alone.

Use the full international ring size chart when a seller uses Japanese, Chinese or Russian labels. The ring size converter is better when you already know a labelled size and simply need its equivalent. Neither page needs screen calibration because conversion changes labels, not physical scale.

Why use the card’s short edge instead of its width?

A standard ID-1 card is 85.60 mm wide and 53.98 mm high. The shorter dimension fits on more phone screens while remaining long enough for precise alignment. A very short reference would magnify a one-pixel error, while the long card edge can be wider than the usable display area on compact phones. The 53.98 mm edge is a practical compromise.

The calibration establishes a ratio: the number of screen pixels you selected divided by 53.98 physical millimetres. A 17.3 mm target is then drawn using that ratio. The browser’s advertised resolution and the device’s hardware pixel count are not part of the calculation. This is also why taking a screenshot of the circle or printing the page does not preserve its physical size.

Do not use a card image displayed on another screen as the reference. You would be transferring the unknown scale of one display into another. The known object must be a real standard card, measured against the same screen on which you will place the ring.

Does the tool work on phones, tablets and laptops?

It works wherever the card’s short edge fits within the calibration area and the ring can lie flat on the display. Phones and tablets are usually convenient because the page and object are close to your eyes. A laptop can work too, but do not press on a flexible display panel, and keep a hinged screen stable while placing the ring.

Browser zoom is allowed before calibration. The card match accounts for the zoom level that is active at that moment. The problem arises when zoom changes afterward, because the circle may be visually rescaled while the stored ratio still reflects the earlier state. Calibrate at the zoom you intend to keep, complete the measurement, and reset if anything changes.

At an extreme zoom level the reference bar may no longer fit the calibration area, or a one-pixel adjustment may be too coarse for confident alignment. Move zoom closer to 100 percent, reload if needed and calibrate again. A larger control is not useful when the known physical edge cannot be placed beside it cleanly.

The tool deliberately does not save calibration between visits. A saved value could be reused on a different monitor, window scale or orientation and look authoritative while being wrong. One fresh card match takes less time than diagnosing an incorrectly ordered ring.

What accuracy should you expect?

Treat this as a careful at-home estimate, not a laboratory instrument or professional fitting. Its accuracy depends on the card being standard and undamaged, exact end alignment, the ring lying flat, your view being perpendicular to the screen, and a stable browser scale. A one-pixel change is small, but several small setup errors can point in the same direction.

The result also describes the ring you measured, not automatically the finger for a new design. A broad band usually feels tighter than a narrow ring at the same nominal diameter. Read the wide-band sizing guide before transferring a thin-ring result to a substantially wider purchase. A prominent knuckle can create a separate fit problem even when the diameter itself is measured correctly.

For an inexpensive, resizable ring, repeating the screen measurement and checking it against a second method is often a sensible ordering basis. For an heirloom, full-eternity design, tension setting or material that cannot be resized, take the ring and intended finger to a jeweller. The cost of that final check is small compared with remaking a restricted design.

What mistakes make an on-screen measurement wrong?

The most common error is skipping calibration because the circle already looks plausible. A wrong scale rarely looks obviously wrong; it simply returns a neighbouring size with convincing decimal places. The next common error is matching the outer diameter. If the band is 2 mm thick, measuring outside edge to outside edge adds about 4 mm across the ring and misses by several sizes.

Other mistakes include holding the long card edge against a bar labelled 53.98 mm, using a non-standard loyalty card, measuring an oval ring in only one direction, looking from an angle, letting a raised stone tip the band, and changing zoom after calibration. A dirty screen or gritty ring is also a safety problem, not merely a measurement problem.

Finally, do not round first and convert later. Save the diameter shown by the slider, then attach the closest labels. If repeated readings alternate between two chart rows, report the unrounded millimetres to the seller instead of choosing whichever label you expected to see.

What if you do not have a ring that fits?

An on-screen circle needs a rigid opening to compare. It cannot measure a bare finger by placing the finger on top of the disk because perspective, pressure and soft tissue change the visible width. Measure the exact finger at a normal indoor temperature and repeat later in the day. Do not pull a paper strip so tightly that it compresses the skin, and make sure the loop can pass the knuckle. When the knuckle is much wider than the finger base, the right solution may involve sizing beads, an inner spring or a hinged shank rather than a single compromise number.

Once you obtain circumference or diameter from another method, use the chart on this site to label it. Do not try to make the on-screen circle imitate a finger measurement it was not designed to perform.

What should you record before ordering?

Write down the measured inner diameter, the closest chart size, the ring used as the reference, and the exact hand and finger that reference fits. Add the date and note whether the source ring is narrow, wide, round or visibly oval. Those details make the result understandable when you return to it weeks later.

Send the original millimetres to the seller and ask which finished size in their own system is the closest match. Then confirm band width, interior profile and resize policy. If the new design is much wider than the reference ring, do not silently alter the recorded diameter. Keep measurement and fit adjustment as separate decisions.

One final repetition is worthwhile before checkout: recalibrate from a reset state, rematch the ring, and compare the new reading with the first. Agreement does not guarantee fit, but disagreement is a clear reason to pause. A calibrated tool is useful because its assumptions are visible and testable.
