How to measure your finger for a ring size
Measure the circumference at the base of the finger, in the evening, at room temperature, then check the same loop slides over your knuckle. A 54.4 mm circumference is a US 7. Take three readings and use the largest, because fingers vary by up to half a ring size across a single day.
Measuring a finger is the fallback method. You use it when there is no ring to copy, and it is genuinely harder than measuring a ring for one reason: a finger is not the same size twice.
Why is measuring a finger harder?
A ring is a rigid object with a fixed diameter. A finger changes size in response to almost everything you do.

That table is the whole reason the measure-once-and-order-immediately approach fails so often. None of these effects are visible, and none of them feel like anything at the time, so nothing prompts you to question the number.
When should you take the reading?
At the end of a normal day, indoors, at room temperature, when you have neither just exercised nor just come in from the cold.
That reading is the closest thing to your true working size, which is the size at which the ring is comfortable most of the time rather than at one extreme of your range. If your schedule only allows a morning measurement, take it and add a quarter size, which is a rough correction but a great deal better than ordering the raw morning figure.
Warming your hands first matters more than the time of day. A genuinely cold hand can read a full ring size smaller than the same hand twenty minutes later indoors, and that single effect is the most common cause of rings that arrive too tight.
How do you measure the base of the finger?
The ring sits at the base, so that is what you measure. On a calibrated screen the process is short.
Open the Finger Gauge, rest the finger on the on-screen gauge, and slide it until the gauge sits snugly against the skin. Snug means firm contact without compressing the flesh, which is a narrower window than it sounds and is worth paying attention to.
Pull tighter than that and you are measuring a compressed finger, which produces a ring that goes on easily and then will not come off. Leave it looser and you are measuring air.
Read the size, then do it twice more.
What is the knuckle test?
This is the step that separates a number from a ring that actually works, and it is the one most guides omit entirely.
Your knuckle is almost always wider than the base of your finger. The ring has to pass over the knuckle to get on, and then sit at the base without spinning. Those are two different requirements, and a single measurement only addresses one of them.
So take two readings. The base circumference tells you how the ring will feel when worn. The knuckle circumference tells you the minimum the ring has to be in order to get there.
Order somewhere between the two, biased toward the knuckle. If the two are more than a full size apart, read the big knuckles guide before ordering anything, because at that point you need a fitted solution rather than a cleverer choice of number.
Why take three readings?
Because one reading tells you what your finger was doing at that moment, and three tell you something about its range.
Take them on three different evenings if you can. If all three land within a quarter size of each other, you have a number you can order against with confidence. If they scatter across a full size, something in your routine is moving them and you should size to the larger end.
Use the largest of the three rather than the average. The asymmetry is deliberate: a ring that is a quarter size loose is a minor annoyance that sizing beads fix for a small fee, while a ring that will not pass the knuckle is unwearable until it is cut and remade.

What mistakes show up most often?
Four, and they account for a large share of rings that have to go back.
Measuring the wrong finger. Every finger has its own size, and left and right differ by a quarter to a half size on most people. If the ring is for the left ring finger, measure the left ring finger rather than whichever one is easiest to reach.
Measuring with cold hands. The commonest cause of engagement rings that arrive too small. Two minutes of warming removes it.
Measuring straight after the gym. Post-exercise fingers can be half a size up, which produces a ring that spins for the rest of the time.
Measuring over the knuckle rather than at the base. That gives you the maximum rather than the working size, and the resulting ring will turn on your finger and eventually be lost.
When is a finger measurement not enough?
When the ring is expensive and cannot be resized. Full eternity bands, tension settings, tungsten and ceramic all fall into that category, and for those a finger measurement on its own is not a strong enough basis for spending the money.
Get a jeweller to size you on a steel mandrel, and use your home measurement as a cross-check on their answer rather than the other way round. If the two disagree by more than half a size, that is worth a conversation before anything is ordered.
For everything else, a plain band, a solitaire, a gift, an online order with a resize policy attached, a careful evening measurement with a calibrated gauge is exactly what you need and is competitive with a shop fitting.
Should you record the measurement anywhere?
Yes, and with a label attached, because a saved number you cannot interpret six months later is not much better than no number at all.
Write down the size, the date, which hand and which finger, and the conditions. “Left ring finger, evening, warm, 17.1 mm” is a record you can act on when you next buy something. A bare “17.1” is a number you will end up re-measuring from scratch because you no longer trust it.
