Printable ring sizers, and why they so often print wrong

A printable ring sizer works only if it prints at exactly 100% scale. Most do not, because printer drivers default to fit-to-page, which shrinks the page by 2 to 6% and shifts the result by up to a full ring size. Always verify with a credit card, since every card is exactly 85.60 mm wide.

Printable ring sizers are free, and when they work they are perfectly decent. The problem is that they often do not work, and they fail silently. The number they produce still looks reasonable, so nobody re-checks it until the ring arrives.

Why do printed sizers go wrong?

Every printable sizer is a set of circles drawn at exact millimetre diameters. The paper only carries that accuracy if the printer reproduces the page at exactly one hundred percent, and printers routinely do not.

Fit to page is switched on by default in a lot of drivers, and it shrinks A4 or Letter content by a few percent to accommodate the unprintable margin around the edge of the sheet.

Shrink oversized pages in PDF viewers does the same thing without announcing it, and it is a separate setting from the driver’s own scaling, so turning one off does not turn off the other.

Borderless and poster modes scale up rather than down, which is the same problem in the opposite direction.

Some drivers scale differently by axis, producing circles that are subtly oval and a measurement that depends on which way round you hold the ring.

A two percent scale error is roughly a full ring size. Six percent, which fit-to-page can easily produce, is closer to three sizes. And nothing on the printed page tells you it has happened.

The check nobody does

Most printable sizers include a reference rectangle for exactly this reason, and most people skip it. If you take one thing from this page: check the reference before you trust the circles.

How do you verify a printout in ten seconds?

Every payment card on earth is manufactured to ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1: 85.60 mm by 53.98 mm. The tolerances are tight and they do not vary between banks or countries, which makes any card in your wallet a free, precisely calibrated ruler.

So: print the sizer at one hundred percent, hold a card against the printed reference rectangle, and look. If the card matches the rectangle exactly, the page is true and every circle on it is correct. If it overhangs or falls short, reprint with scaling switched off rather than trying to correct for the difference in your head.

The same trick verifies an on-screen sizer, which is worth knowing because it means you can apply one test to both. Ring Sizer’s fine-tune screen is built around it: hold a card or a coin against the display and nudge the scale until they match.

How do you use a printed sizer properly?

It depends on whether you have a ring to measure or only a finger.

If you have a ring, place it over the printed circles and find the one whose printed outline just disappears inside the band. Do not settle for the circle the ring roughly matches; use the one that vanishes completely behind the metal. The difference between those two judgements is often a half size.

If you are measuring a finger, cut out the printed strip, thread the pointed end through the slot, tighten until snug, and read the size at the arrow. Then check the loop passes over your knuckle before accepting the number, because a strip that fits the base of the finger but will not clear the joint is describing a ring you cannot put on.

Either way, measure in the evening at room temperature with warm hands.

The point is not that printing is a bad idea. It is that a printed sizer’s accuracy is unknown until you verify it, whereas a screen that reads its own pixel density starts from a known scale and can be checked the same way in two seconds.

What if you do not have a printer at all?

Three options, and the first two are more accurate than printing anyway.

Measure a ring on a calibrated screen. The most accurate at-home method there is, because you are measuring a rigid object against a scale that was set from your device’s published pixel density.

Measure the finger with an on-screen gauge. No ring needed, and accurate to about half a size, with the limit being the finger rather than the tool.

Use the paper strip method. No technology at all, and accurate to about a full size. The technique matters more here than with the others, and it is covered in measuring without a ring sizer.

EU/ISO and Russian sizes are the ring’s inner circumference in millimetres. Diameter is circumference ÷ π. These are the same figures Ring Sizer uses in the app, so a measurement you take in the app and a size you look up here will always agree.

What is the last check before ordering?

Whatever produced your number, printed, on-screen or on paper, validate it against a second method before you spend anything.

Two independent measurements that agree within half a size is a result you can order against with confidence. Two that disagree by a size and a half means one of them is wrong, and you now know to find out which before the money is gone rather than after the ring arrives.

That second measurement is the cheapest insurance in the whole process. It costs a minute and it catches the errors that are otherwise invisible, because the failure mode of every method on this page is producing a plausible number rather than an obviously wrong one.

Are printable sizers ever the right choice?

Yes, in two situations, and it is worth being fair to them.

If you have no smartphone to hand and you do have a printer and a bank card, a scale-checked printout is a perfectly respectable measurement, accurate to about half a size. That is better than a paper strip and considerably better than string.

They are also genuinely useful as a physical reference you can keep. A printed chart taped inside a jewellery box lets anyone check a ring against it in seconds without opening an app, which matters if you are the person in the household who ends up sizing everybody else’s rings.

What they are not is a method you can trust without verifying. Print it, check it against a card, and then it is a real tool. Skip the check and it is a piece of paper with plausible-looking circles on it.
