To find a ring size in inches, measure the ring’s inner diameter and multiply by 25.4 to convert it to millimetres. An inner diameter of about 0.681 inches is US 7, or approximately 17.3 mm. Keep the decimal measurement because common ruler fractions are too coarse for precise ring sizing.

Ring charts usually use millimetres even when the shopper owns an inch ruler. The conversion itself is exact: the US National Institute of Standards and Technology states that one international inch equals exactly 25.4 millimetres. The uncertainty comes from how you locate the ring’s inner edge and how aggressively you round the reading, not from the unit relationship.

Measure the empty opening, not the outside of the metal. If you have an inner diameter in decimal inches, multiply by 25.4 and use the millimetre result to select the nearest chart row. Is your inch measurement diameter or circumference?

Diameter is a straight line through the centre of a round ring’s empty opening. Circumference is the distance all the way around the inside, or the length of a loop around a finger. A plausible ring diameter often begins with 0.5, 0.6, 0.7 or 0.8 inches. A plausible circumference is much longer, often around two inches. That difference is a useful warning, but always label the method rather than identify a value from magnitude alone.

The two measurements are related by pi. Multiply diameter by pi to calculate circumference, or divide circumference by pi to calculate diameter. Do that calculation before rounding to three decimals. Never compare a 2.14-inch finger loop with the diameter column or a 0.68-inch opening with the circumference column. Both can lead to a number that looks precise while describing the wrong dimension.

How do you convert inches to millimetres?

Multiply inches by 25.4. For example, 0.681 inches multiplied by 25.4 is approximately 17.30 mm, which is near a US 7 row. To convert back, divide millimetres by 25.4. A 17.3 mm diameter divided by 25.4 is approximately 0.681 inches. The word “approximately” reflects the displayed decimal being rounded; 25.4 itself is exact.

Keep several decimal places during calculation and round only the value you show. If a ruler reading is already approximate, a calculator cannot recover the missing detail. Write “about 0.68 in inner diameter,” not “0.680000 in,” when the tool could not establish that precision. How do you measure a ring with an inch ruler?

Place a circular, well-fitting ring flat on a stable surface. Align the ruler’s scale with the widest part of the empty opening and read from one inside edge to the opposite inside edge. Most household rulers divide an inch into sixteenths, sometimes thirty-seconds or sixty-fourths. Those marks are convenient for wood and fabric but awkward for a small circular opening. One sixty-fourth of an inch is about 0.397 mm. Choosing the neighbouring line can therefore move the measurement across a chart step, especially when edge thickness and parallax add uncertainty.

Do not convert a visual reading to a simple fraction and then discard the decimal. “11/16 inch” is 0.6875 inches, which is not the same as the 0.681-inch row shown for US 7. It may still point to a nearby size, but it should not be presented as an exact equivalence. Can you measure a finger in inches?

Yes, but a flexible finger is harder to measure consistently than a rigid ring. Wrap a narrow, non-stretch paper strip around the base without compressing the skin. Mark the overlap, lay the strip flat and read its length in decimal inches. Check that the loop can also pass the widest joint. Then multiply the length by 25.4 and use the circumference column.

String is a weak choice because it can stretch, twist and sink into the skin. A thick strip can also add bulk at the overlap. How do you convert an inch circumference to ring size?

First confirm that the value came from a loop around the finger or ring interior. Multiply it by 25.4 to obtain circumference in millimetres. For example, 2.142 inches is approximately 54.4 mm, which appears near US 7 in this site’s chart. If you need diameter as a cross-check, divide the inch circumference by pi before converting units, or divide the millimetre circumference by pi afterward.

Use the unrounded result to identify adjacent size rows. A seller may manufacture whole, half or quarter sizes, and its own chart can round differently. Send the physical circumference with the proposed label: “measured finger circumference about 2.142 in / 54.4 mm; please confirm your closest finished size.” That wording tells the seller exactly what was measured and prevents an inch value from being mistaken for a ring diameter.

Can an on-screen tool show a ring size in inches?

An on-screen tool can measure or display the physical diameter only after the screen has been calibrated. Browser pixels do not have one universal real-world size. Do not hold a ruler to an uncalibrated illustration or measure a screenshot. Zoom, device scaling and screen density can change the displayed circle without changing the label printed beside it. How should you handle a result between chart rows?

Keep the measured decimal instead of forcing it to the closest whole size. Identify the rows on either side and check which increments the seller offers. Then consider band width, inner profile, knuckle clearance and resize options for that specific design. There is no universal instruction to round every between-size result in the same direction.

Repeat the measurement with a second method before choosing. If an existing ring reads 0.690 inches one way and 0.704 inches after rotation, the problem is not merely a halfway result; the ring may be oval or the alignment may be inconsistent. For a rigid circular ring, close repeated values are more persuasive. For a finger, variation across ordinary times is expected, so preserve the range and discuss it with the maker.

Does band width change the inch conversion?

No. A physical inch always converts to the same millimetre value, and the mathematical chart row does not change with design. What can change is the finished size that feels suitable. What mistakes cause the largest inch errors?

Measuring outside edge to outside edge is the largest common error because it includes metal on both sides. Confusing diameter and circumference is another.
