Average ring size for women and men
The average women’s ring size is a US 6 to 7, which is a 16.5 to 17.3 mm diameter, and the average men’s is a US 9 to 10, or 18.9 to 19.8 mm. Most women’s engagement rings sold fall between a US 5½ and a US 7. Use an average as a fallback or a sanity check, never in place of a measurement.
Averages are useful for exactly two things: catching a measurement that has gone badly wrong, and choosing a size when you genuinely cannot measure. They are not a substitute for measuring, and the spread around the average is wide enough that guessing gets it wrong more often than right.

The clustering is tighter than most people expect. A large majority of women’s engagement rings sold fall between a US 5½ and a US 7, which is a span of three half-sizes covering most of the market. That is why jewellers stock those sizes deepest and why a resize in that range comes back fastest.
For men the distribution is wider and flatter. Men’s hands vary more in build, and men’s bands are more often 6 mm or wider, which pushes the ordered size up independently of finger size.
Why do men’s and women’s sizes differ?
Two effects, and they compound rather than cancel.
Larger frames need larger internal diameters, which is the obvious one. Men’s hands average larger in bone structure and in the soft tissue around the base of the fingers, and both contribute to circumference.
The less obvious effect is band width. Men’s rings are far more likely to be 6 mm or wider, and a wide band needs a larger size to pass the knuckle comfortably at the same finger. So a man and a woman with identical fingers could correctly order different sizes purely because of the rings they have chosen.
That second effect is worth separating out when you are comparing numbers, because it means a man’s ordered size is not a pure measurement of his finger in the way a woman’s often is.
What can an average not tell you?
An average is a single number standing in for a distribution, and in ring sizing three things that vary substantially between individuals are completely invisible to it.
Knuckle-to-base ratio. Two people with identical base measurements can need sizes a full size apart if one of them has prominent knuckles. No population average captures that, because it is about the shape of the finger rather than its circumference.
Which hand and finger. The dominant hand usually runs a quarter to a half size larger, and every finger on a hand differs from its neighbours.
Band width and profile. The same finger takes a different size in a 2 mm band and a 7 mm one, and a comfort-fit interior changes it again in the opposite direction.
As a sanity check. If you have measured and got a US 4 for an adult woman, or a US 13 for an average-framed man, the measurement is probably wrong and it is worth taking again before you order. That is the honest use of population data: catching outliers, not predicting individuals.
What should you order if you have to guess?
You are buying a surprise gift and every secret method has failed. In that case the sensible defaults are a US 6 or 6½ for a woman and a US 10 for a man, which are the densest parts of each distribution.
Bias slightly large rather than small. A ring that will not pass the knuckle cannot be worn at all, while one that is slightly loose can be worn on the day and adjusted the following week for very little money.
Then confirm the resize policy in writing before you pay. Many jewellers include one free resize on engagement rings, sometimes within thirty days and sometimes for a year, and a great many do not advertise it unless asked. Check as well that the ring’s design can be resized at all, since full eternity bands and tension settings often cannot without being remade.

Why do published averages disagree with each other?
Because published averages come from jewellers’ sales data, and sales data is not population data. It is shaped by at least three things that have nothing to do with the size of anyone’s fingers.
Which sizes a retailer stocks. Ready-to-ship inventory clusters around the middle of the range, and customers buy what is available, which pulls the reported average toward the middle regardless of what people actually need.
Regional differences. Average hand size varies by population, so a retailer’s average reflects wherever their customers are.
The style being sold. A store selling chunky men’s bands reports larger averages than one selling slim stacking rings, with the same customers and different numbers, because the band width adjustment is baked into the ordered size.
That is why one source says the average is a 6 and another says 7. Both are correct about their own data, and neither is a measurement of your hand.

Find your measured size in the table above. If it sits inside the ranges at the top of this page, your measurement is plausible and you can order against it.
If it sits well outside them, check the three usual suspects before spending anything. Did you measure the outer diameter of a ring rather than the inner one, which reads four to seven sizes large on a typical band? Did you confuse circumference, which runs 44 to 70 mm, with diameter, which runs 14 to 23 mm? And did you measure the finger the ring is actually for rather than whichever one was easiest to reach?
Those three account for the overwhelming majority of implausible results. If none of them applies and the number still looks unusual, it may simply be correct, since plenty of people sit outside the common ranges. In that case a second independent measurement is worth the minute it takes.
