How to photograph your hand for the best AI ring try-on

Shoot in indirect daylight, hand flat with fingers spread, camera directly overhead, against a plain background, with the hand filling most of the frame and no ring already on that finger. Input quality decides output quality more than any other factor.

AI try-on is only ever as good as the photograph you feed it. Six things account for almost all of the difference between a render you would trust enough to buy from and one that looks like a ring has been pasted on, and none of them require a good camera.

What lighting works best?

Indirect daylight, and it matters more than everything else on this list combined.

Stand near a window with the light coming toward you rather than from behind. A bright overcast day is ideal, as is a window on the shaded side of a building. What you are after is soft light that wraps around the hand without producing hard edges.

Avoid direct sunlight. It blows out the highlights and crushes the shadows to black, which removes exactly the tonal information the model needs to work out how metal should catch the light on your particular skin.

Avoid overhead room lighting, which casts hard shadows across the knuckles and usually tints everything yellow. Avoid flash entirely, since it flattens the hand and puts a hotspot precisely where the ring is supposed to sit.

If you can only shoot at night, bounce a bright lamp off a white wall or ceiling rather than pointing it at your hand. Diffuse artificial light is a great deal better than a bare bulb overhead.

How should you pose your hand?

Flat, palm down, fingers spread, straight rather than curled. The app prompts for exactly this and the reason is practical rather than aesthetic.

Spreading the fingers gives every one a clean, separated outline. A relaxed hand with the fingers touching leaves the model guessing where one finger ends and the next begins, which is precisely where a band has to be placed.

Keeping the hand flat matters for the same reason. A curled hand hides the line where the ring would sit, so the render has to invent it.

And relax. A tensed hand shows tendons and changes the visible shape of the finger, which makes the preview less representative of how the ring will actually look when you are not thinking about it.

What angle should you shoot from?

Directly overhead, with the camera parallel to the back of your hand.

Shooting from the side foreshortens the fingers, and a foreshortened finger causes the ring to render at the wrong scale. It lands too small, or sits at an angle that no real ring would sit at, and the result looks wrong without it being obvious why.

The easiest way to get this right is to rest your hand flat on a table and hold the phone above it, rather than holding both in mid-air and trying to line them up. Two hands doing two jobs is harder than it sounds, and if you have someone who can take the photograph for you, that is better still.

What background should you use?

Plain and non-reflective. A wooden table, a painted wall, a sheet of paper, a folded plain cloth.

What you are after is clean separation between the hand and everything behind it. Patterned surfaces confuse edge detection, and anything shiny, glass, mirrors, polished stone, throws reflections that can produce artefacts along the fingers.

Mid-tone backgrounds usually work better than pure white, particularly with paler skin, because white can blow out under the same exposure that gets your hand correct and the two then merge at the edges.

Colour matters slightly too. A strongly coloured surface, a bright red tablecloth for instance, bounces light back up onto the underside of your fingers and tints the skin. It is not fatal, but a neutral grey, beige or pale wood will give you a more honest preview of how a metal actually looks against your own colouring.

How close should you get?

Close enough that the hand fills most of the frame.

More pixels on the hand means more detail for the model to work with, and it means the finger, which is the actual subject, is rendered at a useful resolution rather than being a small part of a wide shot of your kitchen table.

Move the camera closer rather than using digital zoom, which throws away resolution to give you the same framing. On most phones, getting within about twenty centimetres and checking the focus has locked is enough.

Do check the focus rather than assuming it. Phone cameras at close range have a shallow depth of field, and it is easy to end up with the knuckles sharp and the base of the finger soft, which is exactly the wrong way round for this. Tap the screen on the finger you are trying the ring on before you take the shot.

What should you do before taking the photo?

Three small things that each remove a category of problem.

Take off any ring already on the finger you want to try. An existing band confuses placement badly, and the model will often try to render around it.

Make sure your hands are clean and dry. Hand cream produces shine that reads as a highlight, which can end up looking like a reflection off metal that is not there.

Have your nails as you would normally wear them. This is a preview of reality, so making it realistic is the whole point.

Run through it once before you shoot rather than after. Retaking a photograph costs thirty seconds; working out why a render looks wrong takes considerably longer, and the answer is almost always one of the seven lines above.

If you are going to be trying on a lot of rings, it is worth taking three or four photographs in one session and keeping the best. Small differences in how you spread your fingers or where the light falls make more difference to the final render than they appear to on the camera screen, and having a spare means you are not repeating the whole setup a week later when you find another ring you want to see.

What can a good render tell you, and what can it not?

It can show you proportion, which is the main thing people want: whether a stone is too large for your finger, whether a band is too wide, how a setting sits against the shape of your hand. It can show you how a metal colour looks against your own skin, which product photography on a hand model never will. And it gives a reasonable impression of how high a setting stands.

It cannot measure your ring size, and no photograph can. There is no reference object in the frame and no depth information, so there is nothing to scale against. Get the size from the measuring guide and use try-on for style.

It is also indicative rather than exact on colour. Screen calibration, metal finish and stone cut all shift how a real ring looks in a way no render captures.

How should you actually use it?

Comparatively, rather than one ring at a time.

Try three to five rings against the same photograph and look at them side by side. Proportion is a relative judgement, and a solitaire that looks perfect on its own frequently looks small next to a halo. You only find out which you actually prefer by putting them next to each other.

Then write down what you liked about the winner: band width, stone shape, setting height, metal. “I like this one” is hard to act on in a shop or a search box. A specification is not.
